We are lucky to get to work with some pretty awesome kids, teens & young adults. They are the future leaders, change makers and citizens of our community. Meet some of them below!
Gabby started at So What Else summer camp when she was in 2nd Grade. She’s now a 5th grader and is currently attending our spring after-school sessions on Fridays in Silver Spring, MD! She hopes to one day volunteer at our programs to help with the little kids in the community. When asked what makes her most happy, Gabby shared that she loves to draw, especially anime. She learned to draw when she was little, from her uncle when she lived in Alabama. Gabby also loves science and when she gets older she dreams of being a marine biologist.
Gabby says, “...when your a kid, people underestimate you and expect you to act a certain way. Sometimes I’m just like, I’m weird and I like being weird.” We are so proud of the creative and kind soul that Gabby is growing into.
Star is most happiest when she is singing and writing songs & loves to tell “dramatic stories and fairy tales” through her music. Star shared that “singing is the only thing that keeps me motivated. It’s part of my life.”
Star is 11 years old and lives in South West, DC. She attends So What Else Saturday’s because she enjoys the chance to do cool things with her friends, make music and help cook food for the kids & community members. Star steps up and helps our staff prepare food during our monthly community breakfast! Thanks Star for being you!
Ja'Niya is an avid dancer & our 2018 Student of the Year! She’s in 5th grade, lives in Baltimore and her favorite subject is math. Her favorite hobby is dance because it allows her to express herself and she loves moving & grooving! When she grows up she wants to be a dance teacher.
At camp, this past summer, our staff was very proud of the way Ja'Niya was always willing to learn new things and overcome obstacles. Her favorite part of camp was that she "just got to be a kid".
Odean is one of our talented and funny after-school students, who loves to play soccer because its makes him feel free! Odean is in 4th grade, has Jamaican roots, but now lives in Rockville, Md. His favorite subject in school is science! When asked “Why science?” he shared: “...testing the scientific method makes me feel excited because you never know what the results could be.”
Odean loves coming to the program because there is always a ton of different activities to take part in, like sports and making things. He would like the world to know that kids work hard in school and they deserve to get to paid for it! He believes kids can do anything if they have the courage and bravery too.
