January 15: MLK Day of Service

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, So What Else participated at the annual Montgomery County Volunteer Center's MLK Day of Service event. So What Else joined dozens of vendors in bringing different service projects to the Silver Spring Civic Center for the community to take part in!

So What Else's project was bottle bricking, or the creation of sturdy "bricks" out of plastic bottles and inorganic recyclable material. Bottle bricks are used around the world to build schools, homes, "earth benches", and art installations that teach about environmental sustainability while beautifying their surroundings, and they are one of So What Else's most popular service projects with our after school students and summer campers!

Over a dozen volunteers joined our project at a service fair with hundreds to complete 70+ bottle bricks that will eventually be used to build an educational earth bench that illustrates the importance of recycling and protecting our earth in new, innovative ways to preserve its natural resources and beauty.

Thank you to everyone who came out and made the project such a success, and we hope everyone had a meaningful MLK Day, no matter where you celebrated or served.
